Denton Chamber – Membership/Sponsorship?

Based on sharing a common belief in the need to promote the local business community, one has a choice to be a supporting member of the Denton Chamber of Commerce.

Within the city limits of Denton, there are two additional membership-based entities with similar missions, the Denton Black and Denton Hispanic Chambers of Commerce.  There is a state organization, the Texas Association of Business, based in Austin, as well as the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, headquartered in Washington, DC.  There is a regional chamber called the North Texas Commission.

From time to time, each of these organizations will naturally be involved in local efforts to sell memberships or promote their respective events and projects.  None have any type of regulatory or dispute resolution authority.  Each is independent of the other, nor is the Denton Chamber considered a “chapter” of the regional, state or national organizations.

Events and projects sponsored by the Denton Chamber of Commerce are nearly all “by invitation,” with board of directors endorsement.  Published invitations should typically display the current chamber logo, telephone number and/or web site for verification.

One slight exception is an agreement with a private publishing firm to sell advertising in the Denton Chamber city map and community resource magazine, Distinctly Denton.  In this case, individuals commissioned by the publishing company are normally in Denton, usually based at the chamber office, making sales calls and scheduling appointments.   A letter of board endorsement is normally made available.

The Marketing Committee of the Denton Chamber is in the process of distributing an official RFP to prospective publishing companies for the next map/magazine agreement.  Subsequently, there should be no one currently selling any type of publication for the Denton Chamber of Commerce.

If contacted regarding a membership or sponsorship, one should clarify the specific chamber or organization that has endorsed the solicitation.  The term “chamber of commerce” can obviously be attributed and connected to many different entities.
